Unlike Vintage Port, which is bottled after only two years in wood and ages in bottle, LBV is bottled after four to six years and is ready to drink when bottled.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTaylor’s continues to lead the LBV category of Port worldwide, in spite of the fact that many other shippers now also produce an LBV. The wines used to blend Taylor’s LBV were drawn from a reserve of some of the best full bodied red Ports, produced at the 2019 harvest, from grapes grown on Taylor’s own vineyards and on other top properties in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior areas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNotes on the Viticultural Year and Harvest\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter a warm and dry period of dormancy, the vineyard cycle began slightly early with budburst on 9th March, about a week ahead of the usual calendar. Overall, the growing season was drier and cooler than average although the usual April rains were quite heavy, with around 98 mm of precipitation as the grapes began to colour (véraison) at around the usual time in mid-July. Although the ripening season began with high temperatures, the weather in the critical month of August was cooler than average with some rainfall on 25th and 26th to balance the ripening of the Harvesting of red grapes in the eastern areas of the Douro began in hot weather on 4th September and at Pinhão on 14th. The crop was perfectly healthy and in excellent condition, although yields were almost a tenth lower than the 10-year average. The first impression is of intense woodland fruit with crisp brambly blackcurrant and blackberry aromas. The nose has a youthful freshness and vigour, the first burst of powerful, black berry fruit slowly revealing undertones of raspberry and cherry, scents of wild herbs and discreet warmer notes of liquorice and coffee. Although the aromas have a sensuous dimension, this elegant and polished LBV displays the characteristic Taylor definition and restraint. The palate is supported by taut, sinewy but perfectly integrated tannins and delivers a surge of powerful woodland berry flavours from the outset which are sustained into the long finish. The character of the 2019 harvest, with its freshness and pure, bright fruit, shines through on this wine. The extreme conditions of 2020 has similarities to the 2009 and 1820 Harvest, where the sugar levels reached extraordinarily high levels. November and December 2019 saw significant rainfall, 310mm at Pinhão, topping up the ground reserves. The remainder of the dormant period was dry and warm, with high minimum temperatures resulting in the earliest budburst in 18 years, occurring at Pinhão on the 3rd of March.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe four-month period of growth continued warm, and with regular rainfall in March and April ensuring sufficient water reserves to face the rest of the season. The first signs of flowering in the A Grade vineyards were recorded on the 4th May, confirming the advanced development of the vines. Veraison occurred early on the 7th of July, in what was to be recorded as the hottest July since 1931, when records begun. The average temperature for July was 28.19º C compared to the average for 2005-2019 of 24.7º C. August was milder and in the middle of August the vine canopies were remarkably well conserved.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe low yields together with the good water reserves from the winter and spring led to a fast rate a ripening. Between the 17th and 20th August, it rained 21 mm, which further contributed to the ripening, and at the end of August there was a visible change in the conservation of the grapes. This was particularly evident with the Touriga Francesa. On the 5th of September we started the picking at Quinta de Vargellas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"taylors-products-detail-description-item\"\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"section-title size-10 black font-bold text-uppercase\"\u003eTasting Notes\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"description-text size-02 black font-regular\"\u003eDeep purple with a ruby red rim. The nose is refined and complex, revealing multiple layers of aroma. A fine blend of wild strawberry, cassis, raspberry and plum provides the base for the elegant floral scents, hints of liquorice and rock rose. The palate is voluptuous, supported by tense linear tannins and clean, crisp flavours of damsons and plums which continue into the long finish.
