Elegant and beautifully maturing Cru Bourgeois.
Production
Vines average 25 years of age and grow on particularly gravelly and sandy, free-draining soil within 23ha of Château Carcanieux's 40ha Médoc estate. Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%) are vinified in stainless steel tanks and aged oak barrels, with no more than a fifth in new oak.
Tasting notes
Lifted cassis fruit on the nose showing lovely evolution and a touch of cedar wood. Luscious, with gentle structure, some subtle spice and a freshness which all combine to make a well balanced, complete and beautifully maturing wine.
Food match
Try with a peppered steak, chargrilled lamb or venison.

Meet the Producer
Château Carcanieux covers an area of 40 hectares, 37 of which are planted with vines - mostly consisting of old vine Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate sits on a ridge above the town of Queyrac named Les Terres Hautes de Carcanieux ("The Highlands of Queyrac"). The soil here is extremely gravelly, giving rise the estate's original name that is carved into its pediment: Carcanieux Les Graves.
A Note on Sustainability
Château Carcanieux is a part of the Maison Ginestet stable of wines. As both a négociant and a producer of its own wines, Maison Ginestet has long been convinced of the need to work the land in a viable manner and it places substantial emphasis on partnerships with sustainable agriculture-accredited winegrowing estates. Some growers are fully organic, and Ginestet is certified to bottle wines made from organically grown grapes.
In 2006, Maison Ginestet set up an international wine school at its Carignan-de-Bordeaux site. Through the Ginestet Wine Academy, Maison Ginestet shares with its commercial partners the expertise it has gained over more than a century of producing and marketing Bordeaux wines.
