Smooth, rounded and gently spiced, Matusalem Gran Reserva 15 is an elegant sipping rum with Cuban roots. Established in Santiago de Cuba in 1872, Matusalem now produces its rums in the Dominican Republic, continuing a tradition of solera ageing inspired by Spanish sherry and brandy production.

Deep mahogany in colour, with amber and golden highlights, this rum offers inviting aromas of vanilla, caramel, honey and toasted oak, lifted by a touch of clove. The palate brings together caramel and coffee notes with mellow wood flavours and gentle spice, leading to a lingering, warming finish.

What is the solera system?

Solera is a method of ageing and blending that brings together rums of different ages through a series of casks.

A portion of mature rum is drawn from the oldest stage for bottling. Those casks are then topped up with rum from the next, younger stage, which is replenished in turn. Younger rum enters at the beginning of the system, while some older rum remains through successive cycles.

This gradual blending helps maintain a consistent house style, combining the liveliness of younger rum with the depth and oak character of older stocks.

The “15” refers to the average age of the rums in the solera blend. By bringing together younger and older rums, Matusalem creates a balanced spirit that combines freshness with the depth, complexity and mellow oak character developed through longer maturation.
