Meet the Producer
Sileni Estates was born from a long-standing interest in wine by Graeme Avery. In late 1997, along with financial director Chris Cowper and winemaker Grant Edmonds, he established Sileni as an export-oriented producer, committed to crafting world-class fine wines.
The winery is named after the Sileni who featured in Greek mythology as the companions of Dionysus, the God of Wine. They celebrated good wine, good food and good company - the holy trinity here at Boutinot. The vineyards and winery are based near Hasting in, Hawke’s Bay - the oldest wine region in New Zealand, on the east coast of the North Island. The wines are precise and fruit-driven, and as well as Pinot Noir and Syrah the range includes a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
A Note on Sustainability
Sileni has been certified under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) scheme since 2002. SWNZ provides the framework to continually work towards improving aspects of performance in terms of environmental sustainability in both the vineyard and winery. All Sileni wines are produced from 100% accredited vineyards and made in their accredited winery, displaying the sustainable winegrowing logo on their back labels.
In many of their premium vineyards, Sileni use sheep for winter grazing, reducing the weeds and returning organic matter to the soil, along with the previous season's mulched vine cuttings, increasing the soil microbiological diversity, water retention and structure. They use 'low mo' grasses, which reduces the number of tractor passes required, protecting and enhancing soil health.
In the winery, they take a minimal intervention approach to winemaking. This approach extends to resource usage, only using what is needed, with ongoing initiatives to conserve and reduce water, waste and energy use.
Wine bottles are produced from recycled glass, predominately lightweight, and the cartons are from fully recycled and recyclable materials, using around 70% less ink than previous packaging.
Behind the winery, they have extensive native tree plantings to encourage wildlife and plant biodiversity within the vineyards while increasing natural carbon sequestration.
Sileni also works closely with the local council to protect and improve the Paritua stream that runs alongside its vineyards, clearing unwanted plants and re-introducing native species of flora and fauna.
